Ribes nigrum 'Cassissima® Blackbells'
Blackcurrant 'Cassissima® Blackbells' is a breakthrough variety that excels in sweetness, berry size, and harvest quality. It features the most beautiful and longest strings of any Cassissima® blackcurrant, often carrying up to 15 large, glossy black berries per cluster. These long, elegant strings make picking a pleasure and offer a visually striking harvest.
The berries are pleasantly mild and sweet with a classic cassis aroma, ideal for fresh eating, preserves, and desserts. Fruits should be harvested only when fully ripe to appreciate their best flavour. This variety ripens from early to mid-July, making it a mid-season cultivar.
'Blackbells' also boasts excellent disease resistance, particularly against mildew, and grows with a medium-strong, upright, and broad habit, suitable for small gardens or larger fruit plots.

Blackcurrant Growing Tips
- Happier planted in a sunny, sheltered site but they can tolerate light shade.
- Prefer moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
- When planting, set the bush slightly deeper than it was in the pot to encourage new shoots from the base.
- Mulch annually with organic matter to keep the soil cool and moist.
- Prune in winter after harvesting: remove a quarter to a third of the oldest stems at the base to encourage new growth.
- If you would like to eat the fruits yourself, don't forget to cover the plant to stop the birds getting them!
