Ribes nigrum Cassissima® 'Black Marble'®
Ribes nigrum Cassissima® 'Black Marble'® is an outstanding blackcurrant variety producing exceptionally large, glossy black berries that can exceed 1cm in diameter. Among the largest blackcurrants available, the fruits have a high proportion of juicy flesh and relatively few seeds.
The berries have a mild, sweet flavour with a subtle cassis aroma, making them particularly enjoyable when eaten fresh. They are also excellent for juicing, baking, desserts and preserves. An early-ripening variety, the generous fruits are ready to harvest from late June into July.
Hardy, self-fertile and easy to grow, 'Black Marble' performs best in full sun or partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Its vigorous growth shows high tolerance to powdery mildew, while the attractive green foliage remains on the plant well into autumn.

Blackcurrant Growing Tips
- Happier planted in a sunny, sheltered site but they can tolerate light shade.
- Prefer moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
- When planting, set the bush slightly deeper than it was in the pot to encourage new shoots from the base.
- Mulch annually with organic matter to keep the soil cool and moist.
- Prune in winter after harvesting: remove a quarter to a third of the oldest stems at the base to encourage new growth.
- If you would like to eat the fruits yourself, don't forget to cover the plant to stop the birds getting them!
