Blackcurrant Lowberry 'Little Black Sugar'
Blackcurrant 'Little Black Sugar' is a naturally compact variety producing generous crops of medium to large, glossy black fruits. The berries have the classic rich cassis flavour of blackcurrants, balanced by an appealing sweetness that makes them enjoyable straight from the bush.
Fruit ripens from late July into August and is ideal for eating fresh, cooking, juicing, preserves and desserts. Its compact growth habit makes 'Little Black Sugar' particularly well suited to smaller gardens, raised beds and large patio containers.
Self-fertile and easy to grow, this productive variety also offers good disease resistance, including resistance to downy mildew. Grow in a sunny or lightly shaded position in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil for the best crops.

Blackcurrant Growing Tips
- Happier planted in a sunny, sheltered site but they can tolerate light shade.
- Prefer moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
- When planting, set the bush slightly deeper than it was in the pot to encourage new shoots from the base.
- Mulch annually with organic matter to keep the soil cool and moist.
- Prune in winter after harvesting: remove a quarter to a third of the oldest stems at the base to encourage new growth.
- If you would like to eat the fruits yourself, don't forget to cover the plant to stop the birds getting them!
