Plant of the Month
October Plant of the Month - Skimmia
Bring colour and structure to the garden this autumn with Skimmia - compact evergreen shrubs valued for their glossy foliage, colourful flower buds and excellent year-round interest.
Ideal for borders, containers and shady areas of the garden, Skimmias are particularly attractive through autumn and winter when clusters of red, pink or green-tinged flower buds stand above their rich evergreen leaves. These buds gradually develop before opening into small, fragrant flowers in spring, providing an important early source of nectar for pollinating insects.
Easy to grow and naturally neat in habit, Skimmias prefer a sheltered position in partial shade and an acidic to neutral soil. Their combination of evergreen foliage, long-lasting buds, spring flowers and, on selected varieties, colourful berries makes them an excellent choice for adding dependable interest to the garden throughout the colder months.
