Ribes nigrum 'Ben Alder'

Blackcurrant 'Ben Alder' is a very high-yielding mid-season variety producing small berries from late July to August of exceptional quality, known for their high vitamin C content and excellent colour stability. The fruits are ideal for juicing, cooking, freezing, and preserving, and the variety is widely valued in both home gardens and commercial production.

Bushy yet fairly compact, ‘Ben Alder’ is well suited to smaller gardens and offers strong disease resistance, particularly against foliar issues. Its late flowering period helps it avoid damage from late spring frosts, ensuring reliable crops year after year.

Blackcurrant Growing Tips

  • Happier planted in a sunny, sheltered site but they can tolerate light shade.
  • Prefer moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • When planting, set the bush slightly deeper than it was in the pot to encourage new shoots from the base.
  • Mulch annually with organic matter to keep the soil cool and moist.
  • Prune in winter after harvesting: remove a quarter to a third of the oldest stems at the base to encourage new growth.
  • If you would like to eat the fruits yourself, don't forget to cover the plant to stop the birds getting them!
