Cerastium tomentosum
Cerastium tomentosum is a vigorous, low-growing perennial forming a dense mat of soft, silvery-grey foliage. Masses of star-shaped white flowers with neatly notched petals create a bright carpet above the narrow, woolly leaves, bringing contrast and texture to sunny planting schemes.
Flowering from May to July, Snow-in-Summer is particularly effective spilling over low walls, raised beds and the edges of paths. Its spreading stems fill gaps between rocks and soften hard landscaping, while the silver foliage provides an attractive backdrop for other sun-loving alpines.
Hardy and drought tolerant once established, this easy-to-grow perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is ideal for rockeries, gravel gardens, dry banks and containers, where its vigorous growth has room to spread. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy carpet and contain its growth.
