Skimmia japonica 'Double Diamond' (M)
Skimmia japonica 'Double Diamond' is a compact male evergreen shrub with glossy green foliage and decorative flower buds. Clusters of red and green buds stand above the leaves on reddish stems, adding colour through autumn and winter.
In spring, the buds open into fragrant, creamy-white flowers that attract bees and other pollinating insects. Its neat, bushy habit makes it ideal for shaded borders, woodland-style planting and patio containers. This male variety does not produce berries but can pollinate compatible female Skimmias nearby.
Grow in partial shade in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Use ericaceous compost when planting in containers and water regularly during dry spells. Little pruning is needed; lightly trim after flowering if required to maintain its shape.
