Rubus occidentalis 'Black Jewel'
Raspberry 'Black Jewel' is a distinctive summer-fruiting black raspberry producing unusual dark purple-black berries. Its vigorous floricane growth carries white spring flowers that attract pollinating insects before developing into generous crops of richly coloured fruit.
The medium-sized berries ripen during July and into early August, offering a sweet, aromatic flavour combining the character of raspberries and blackberries. Delicious when freshly picked, the fruits are also excellent for jams, cakes, smoothies, desserts and freezing.
Hardy, self-fertile and easy to grow, 'Black Jewel' shows good resistance to raspberry root rot. It performs best in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Train the canes against supporting wires and remove the old fruited growth after harvesting.
