Polystichum rigens
Polystichum rigens is a compact evergreen fern forming neat mounds of arching, glossy green fronds. The narrowly triangular foliage has a firm, leathery texture and sharply serrated edges, bringing lasting detail and structure to shaded planting schemes.
New fronds emerge fresh green before maturing to mid-green, creating an attractive contrast with hostas, hellebores and other woodland perennials. The foliage can be aromatic in midsummer, while its slow-growing, clump-forming habit makes it particularly useful for smaller gardens, shaded border edges and underplanting beneath trees and shrubs.
Hardy and easy to grow, this fern prefers partial or full shade in moist but well-drained soil enriched with leaf mould or garden compost. It also suits sheltered patio containers, where its evergreen foliage can be enjoyed throughout the year. Water regularly while establishing, especially beneath trees where roots compete for moisture.
