Athyrium niponicum var. pictum
Athyrium niponicum var. pictum is a colourful deciduous fern with finely divided fronds washed in metallic silver and soft grey-green. Burgundy-purple colouring along the central veins provides a striking contrast, creating an almost painted effect that brings brightness and texture to shaded areas.
Forming a neat mound of gently arching fronds, this compact fern provides seasonal interest from spring into autumn before naturally dying back for winter. Its distinctive foliage combines beautifully with hostas, heucheras and other woodland perennials, making it particularly effective at the front of shaded borders or in patio containers.
Hardy and easy to grow, 'Metallicum' thrives in partial or full shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, preferably neutral to acidic. Add leaf mould or garden compost when planting and water during dry spells. Remove old fronds in late winter or early spring before the fresh foliage emerges.
