Polystichum polyblepharum
Polystichum polyblepharum is a handsome evergreen fern forming a graceful shuttlecock of glossy, dark green fronds. Its finely divided foliage creates a lush, layered appearance, bringing lasting texture and structure to shaded borders and woodland planting schemes.
Fresh fronds emerge yellow-green in spring, covered with hair-like golden scales that add warmth and texture to the new growth. As they unfurl, their tips briefly droop like tassels before opening fully, creating the distinctive effect that gives this fern its common name.
Hardy and low maintenance, this fern thrives in partial or full shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Ideal for underplanting trees and shrubs or growing in shaded containers, it combines beautifully with hostas and hellebores. Choose a site with good drainage, especially in winter, and remove dead fronds before fresh growth appears.
