Polypodium vulgare
Polypodium vulgare is a hardy native evergreen fern with deeply divided, leathery green fronds. Its attractive foliage brings lasting texture and greenery to the garden, creating a soft, natural appearance that suits woodland gardens and shaded planting schemes.
Spreading gradually by creeping rhizomes, it forms low mats that are useful for underplanting trees and shrubs. It is also well suited to shaded rockeries, banks and crevices in old walls, where its compact fronds add character and help soften hard surfaces.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, common polypody thrives in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade, tolerating drier conditions once established. Water regularly during its first growing season and mulch to help it settle in. Remove dead or damaged fronds as needed to keep the display tidy.
