Pachyphragma macrophylla
Pachyphragma macrophylla is an elegant and highly underrated woodland perennial, prized for its early spring display and its ability to thrive in deep shade. In March and April, masses of pure white, four-petalled flowers rise above broad, heart-shaped green leaves, creating a soft, luminous carpet at a time of year when few other shade plants are performing.
This hardy, rhizomatous perennial slowly forms a dense, weed-suppressing groundcover that remains attractive throughout the growing season. Its bold foliage pairs beautifully with ferns, epimediums and hostas, making it ideal for underplanting shrubs, edging shady paths or naturalising beneath trees. Exceptionally low-maintenance and tolerant of dry shade once established.
