Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'
Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' is a graceful, deciduous ornamental grass with narrow, ribbon-like leaves striped bright golden-yellow and green. The foliage arches outwards in soft layers, forming a flowing mound that brings colour, texture and gentle movement to shaded planting schemes.
Its cascading habit makes it particularly effective for softening paths, steps, container edges and the front of borders. The luminous foliage contrasts beautifully with ferns, hostas and Japanese maples, while reddish autumn tints extend its seasonal interest before the leaves die back for winter.
Hardy and low maintenance, 'Aureola' thrives in partial or dappled shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It is ideal for woodland borders, underplanting shrubs and shaded patio containers where moisture can be maintained. Cut back the old foliage in late winter before fresh growth emerges in spring.
