Erica carnea 'Challenger'
Erica carnea 'Challenger' is a compact evergreen shrub forming a low, spreading mat of fine, dark bronze-green foliage. From January to April, vibrant magenta flowers with contrasting crimson sepals cover the stems, bringing rich colour to the garden through winter and early spring.
Its carpeting habit makes it ideal for banks, rockeries, border edges and groundcover planting. It also works beautifully in patio containers, paired with spring bulbs or contrasting evergreen foliage. The long-lasting flowers provide valuable nectar for bees during the colder months, when other sources are scarce.
Hardy and easy to maintain, 'Challenger' grows best in full sun or light partial shade with well-drained soil. This lime-tolerant winter heather grows successfully in acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions, making it a versatile garden choice. A light trim after flowering helps maintain its neat, dense shape.
