Dryopteris filix-mas
Dryopteris filix-mas is a robust native deciduous fern forming handsome clumps of tall, finely divided green fronds. Fresh foliage unfurls in spring, developing into an upright, arching shuttlecock shape that brings texture and architectural structure to shaded planting schemes.
Its generous foliage provides a lush backdrop for hostas, astilbes and other shade-loving perennials, creating a natural woodland feel. Ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens and underplanting beneath shrubs, the fronds remain attractive through the growing season before naturally dying back for winter.
Hardy, reliable and low maintenance, this fern thrives in partial or full shade with moist, humus-rich soil. It tolerates dry shade once established, although regular watering during its first season helps it settle in. An annual mulch supports healthy growth, while old or damaged fronds can be removed before fresh spring foliage appears.
