Dryopteris cycadina
Dryopteris cycadina is an elegant, semi-evergreen fern forming a bold rosette of upright to arching, fresh green fronds. The neatly arranged, toothed leaflets create a strong architectural outline, while thick, dark scales cover the stems, providing a striking contrast and giving this fern its distinctive shaggy appearance.
Fresh fronds unfurl in spring, bringing renewed colour and texture to shaded planting schemes. The mature foliage provides a long season of interest and can remain attractive through winter in sheltered conditions. Its handsome form combines beautifully with hostas, hellebores and other woodland perennials.
Easy to grow in partial or full shade, this fern prefers a sheltered position with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. It is ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders and underplanting beneath shrubs. Water regularly while establishing and mulch to help retain moisture, removing damaged fronds when needed.
