Asplenium scolopendrium
Asplenium scolopendrium is a distinctive British native fern forming a handsome rosette of glossy, strap-shaped green fronds. Unlike the finely divided foliage of many ferns, its broad, undivided leaves create a bold and architectural appearance in shaded areas.
The upright fronds gradually arch outwards as they mature, providing year-round colour, texture and structure. Mature leaves develop rows of brown spores on their undersides, while fresh new growth unfurls from the centre of the plant during spring.
Hardy, reliable and easy to grow, Hart's Tongue Fern thrives in partial or full shade with humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. It is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, walls and containers, and will tolerate periods of dry shade once established.
