Abelia × grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope'
Abelia × grandiflora 'Kaleidoscope' is a colourful dwarf shrub with glossy, variegated foliage and a naturally compact, mounded habit. The leaves combine bright yellow margins with green centres, gradually developing warm orange and red tones as autumn approaches. Evergreen in milder conditions, it may lose some foliage during colder winters.
Small, fragrant white flowers, often lightly flushed pink, appear through summer and autumn, adding a delicate display amongst the colourful leaves. Its changing foliage makes it particularly effective for brightening mixed borders, while repeated planting creates an attractive low informal hedge. It also provides a colourful focal point in a generous patio container.
Easy to grow and drought tolerant once established, 'Kaleidoscope' performs best in full sun, where foliage colour and flowering are strongest. Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil and choose a sheltered position away from cold winds. Light spring trimming helps maintain its neat shape.
