Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' (M)
Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' is a compact male evergreen shrub prized for its glossy dark green foliage and richly coloured winter buds. Dense clusters of deep red flower buds develop in autumn and remain attractive throughout winter, providing valuable seasonal colour and structure.
In spring, the buds open to reveal fragrant creamy-white flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark foliage and are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. As a male variety, 'Rubella' does not produce berries but is an excellent pollinator for compatible female Skimmias planted nearby.
With its neat, rounded habit and year-round appeal, 'Rubella' is ideal for shaded borders, woodland-style planting and patio containers. Easy to grow and low maintenance, it performs best in partial shade in moist but well-drained soil.
