Sciadopitys verticillata
Sciadopitys verticillata is a distinctive evergreen conifer admired for its unusual whorls of glossy dark green needles. Arranged in umbrella-like clusters around the stems, the foliage gives this remarkable tree a strong architectural appearance and excellent year-round interest.
Slow growing and naturally developing a neat, conical habit, Sciadopitys verticillata makes an impressive specimen plant for borders, rock gardens and larger containers. Its refined form works particularly well in Japanese-inspired, contemporary and traditional planting schemes.
Long lived and reliable in the right conditions, Japanese Umbrella Pine performs best in a sheltered position in fertile, moist but well-drained acidic soil. Avoid very dry or exposed sites to help maintain healthy, attractive growth.
