Sarcococca hookeriana 'Winter Gem' is a superb evergreen shrub and one of the finest forms of sweet box, combining toughness with year-round beauty. With larger than average glossy, rich green leaves, it provides structure and depth throughout the year. In the depths of winter, its bare stems are adorned with clusters of highly fragrant, creamy-white flowers which fill the air with a sweet perfume and are attractive to early bees.
After flowering, spherical red berries develop, ripening to glossy black and extending the seasonal interest well into summer. A compact, bushy grower, ‘Winter Gem’ thrives even in shaded positions where other shrubs may fail, making it a particularly valuable addition to woodland gardens, north-facing borders, or as a low-maintenance container specimen.
