Santolina chamaecyparissus
Santolina chamaecyparissus is a compact evergreen shrub forming dense, rounded mounds of finely divided silver-grey foliage. The aromatic leaves release a pleasant scent when brushed or handled, adding extra sensory interest to sunny planting schemes.
In summer, masses of bright yellow, button-like flowers rise above the silvery foliage, creating a bold contrast and a cheerful Mediterranean-style display. The blooms are also attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
Drought tolerant and easy to grow, this hardy shrub is ideal for edging, gravel gardens, coastal planting and low-maintenance borders. It performs best in full sun and sharply drained soil, where its compact habit and silver foliage remain at their best.
