Rhododendron dauricum 'April Rose'
Rhododendron dauricum 'April Rose' is a compact, early-flowering rhododendron that brings rich colour to the garden at the very start of spring. From late March into April, clusters of lightly fragrant double flowers open in glowing shades of ruby-purple to purplish rose.
The small, deep green leaves provide an attractive backdrop through the growing season before developing reddish-bronze tones in autumn. Its upright, well-branched habit gives the plant a neat appearance while still forming a broad, rounded shrub.
Ideal for woodland gardens, mixed borders and smaller spaces, 'April Rose' grows best in moist but well-drained acidic soil in full sun or partial shade. A sheltered south- or west-facing position will help protect the early flowers and encourage a strong spring display.
