Ribes rubrum 'Jonkheer van Tets'
Ribes rubrum 'Jonkheer van Tets' is a classic early-season redcurrant producing heavy crops of large, glossy dark red berries on long, easy-to-pick strings. One of the earliest redcurrants to ripen, its fruit is generally ready for harvesting from late June into July.
The juicy berries have a pleasantly sweet yet tangy flavour and can be enjoyed fresh or used for summer puddings, jams, jellies, sauces and homemade wine. Small greenish-white flowers appear during spring, developing into generous clusters of colourful fruit.
Upright, vigorous and self-fertile, 'Jonkheer van Tets' is a reliable choice for fruit gardens and allotments. It performs best in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, although it will tolerate partial shade. This dependable variety also holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Redcurrant Growing Tips
- Plant in a sunny, sheltered position for the best crops, although light shade is tolerated.
- Choose fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
- Plant container-grown redcurrants at the same depth as they were growing in the original pot.
- Mulch annually with well-rotted compost or manure to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain an open, productive framework, removing damaged, crossing and less productive branches.
- Protect ripening fruit with suitable netting or grow inside a fruit cage to prevent birds taking the crop.
