Ribes rubrum Ribest® 'Babette'®
Ribes rubrum Ribest® 'Babette'® is a compact, upright redcurrant producing high and reliable yields of exceptionally large, glossy light red berries. The fruit has a mild, fruity flavour with juicy flesh, relatively few seeds and noticeably less acidity than many traditional redcurrants.
The earliest-ripening variety in the Ribest® series, 'Babette' produces fruit from mid-June to mid-July. Its berries are carried in compact clusters and are delicious eaten fresh, while also being excellent for jams, jellies, sauces, desserts and other culinary uses.
Hardy, self-fertile and easy to grow, this productive variety is ideal for fruit gardens, allotments and edible planting schemes. It performs best in full sun or partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Protect the developing crop from birds as the berries begin to ripen.
