Raoulia hookeri
Raoulia hookeri is a fascinating mat-forming alpine perennial prized for its dense carpet of tiny silver-grey leaves. Often known as Scabweed, this unusual evergreen creates a soft, moss-like cushion that hugs the ground, making it ideal for rock gardens, troughs, alpine beds and crevice planting.
Its creeping stems root as they spread, gradually forming an attractive low-growing mat that provides year-round interest. During summer, small pale green to straw-coloured flowers appear amongst the foliage, adding subtle seasonal detail without detracting from the plant's distinctive texture.
Native to New Zealand, Raoulia hookeri thrives in well-drained soils and sunny positions where its compact habit and silvery foliage can be fully appreciated. It is particularly effective when planted amongst rocks or gravel where its unique appearance can be showcased.
