Primula veris
Primula veris is a charming native perennial producing clusters of nodding, golden-yellow flowers above rosettes of softly textured green foliage. Commonly known as the cowslip, it brings traditional spring colour and a naturalistic character to the garden.
The lightly scented flowers appear mainly during April and May, providing a valuable source of nectar and pollen for bees and other early pollinators. Their slender upright stems allow the blooms to sway gently above the foliage, creating an attractive display in informal planting schemes.
Hardy and easy to grow, cowslips thrive in full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. They are ideal for naturalising in grass, wildflower meadows, cottage gardens and woodland edges, where they will return reliably each spring.
