Matteuccia struthiopteris
Matteuccia struthiopteris is a hardy, deciduous fern forming tall, upright rosettes of bright green, finely divided fronds. Emerging in spring, the foliage unfurls into an elegant shuttlecock shape, creating bold architectural height and a lush woodland appearance.
Its arching, feather-like fronds bring texture and movement to shaded borders, combining beautifully with hostas, astilbes and other moisture-loving perennials. Shorter, brown fertile fronds grow within the green rosettes and may remain through winter after the leafy fronds have died back, providing additional seasonal interest.
Easy to grow in partial or full shade, this fern prefers moist, humus-rich soil and shelter from drying winds. It spreads by underground runners to form colonies, making it especially effective in damp woodland gardens, pondside planting and larger shaded areas where it has room to develop.
