Athyrium sheareri
Athyrium sheareri is a distinctive deciduous fern valued for its unusual two-tiered appearance. Broad, bottle-green infertile fronds form a low, spreading base, while narrower fertile fronds rise upright above them on longer stems.
The stems often develop attractive red-wine colouring, which may also extend subtly into parts of the frond blade. This contrast between the rich green foliage and darker stems gives the plant additional texture and seasonal interest.
Ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders and sheltered areas beneath trees and shrubs, this elegant fern performs best in moist but well-drained soil. It is hardy in protected positions and requires very little maintenance once established.
