Vaccinium vitis-idaea 'Red Candy'
Vaccinium vitis-idaea 'Red Candy' is a compact evergreen lingonberry with small, glossy dark green leaves and a neat, bushy habit. From late spring into early summer, sprays of pale pink-white, bell-shaped flowers appear, followed by abundant bright red berries.
Selected for early flowering and fruiting, 'Red Candy' produces a colourful crop that remains attractive on the plant for a long time. The edible berries have a distinctly tart flavour and are particularly good for jams, pies and sauces, combining useful fruit production with an ornamental display.
Hardy and compact, this variety is ideal for patio pots, woodland-style borders and low groundcover. Grow in partial shade or shade with humus-rich, acidic, moist but well-drained soil. Use ericaceous compost in containers and water regularly to prevent the roots drying out, particularly during warm weather.
