Tillandsia caput-medusae
Tillandsia caput-medusae is one of the most distinctive air plants, admired for its swollen silvery-green base and twisting, serpentine leaves that resemble the hair of Medusa from Greek mythology. This unusual shape makes it an eye-catching addition to modern interiors, terrariums and air plant displays.
Unlike most houseplants, it requires no compost, absorbing moisture and nutrients through specialised scales on its leaves. In spring or early summer, mature plants may produce an impressive flower spike with striking violet blooms, followed by offsets, or "pups", which gradually form around the parent plant.
- Other names: Medusa's Head Air Plant, Air Plant, Octopus Plant
- Useful to know: Non-toxic - safe around pets and children
- Eventual height: Can grow up to 25cm
- Origins: Central America and Mexico
