Tillandsia abdita - Air Plant
Tillandsia abdita is one of the most colourful Tillandsias in our air plant collection. This rare and unique species has many soft, silvery-green leaves that gradually blush red or purple as the plant matures and approaches flowering. Its rosette form and vibrant hues make it a standout addition to any indoor display.
Popularly referred to as Tillandsia brachycaulos, it shares similarities with that species but remains distinct for its softer texture and deeper colouration. Native to Mexico and Central America, it naturally grows in dry woodlands and deserts at elevations of 600–1200 metres, where it thrives in bright, airy conditions. Perfect for terrariums, mounted displays, or open arrangements, it adds a sculptural and colourful touch to any interior.

Tillandsia Care Sheet
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or gentle filtered sunlight. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can dehydrate the leaves.
Water: Mist thoroughly 2–3 times a week, ensuring water runs into the leaf base. Alternatively, submerge in room-temperature water for 20–30 minutes weekly, then shake off excess. Allow to dry fully before returning to display.
Soil/Nutrition: No soil needed. Feed monthly with a diluted bromeliad or air plant fertiliser added to your misting water.
Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity and good airflow. Excellent for bathrooms or kitchens with natural light.
Pruning and propagation: Remove any dried outer leaves to maintain a tidy rosette. Propagate from offsets (“pups”) once half the size of the parent plant.
