Taxus baccata
Taxus baccata, the traditional English Yew, is a classic evergreen conifer with a long history of cultivation in Britain, often found in churchyards and historic landscapes. Its dense, dark green foliage and slow growth make it a versatile choice for formal hedging, topiary, or as a long-lived specimen tree. In autumn, female plants produce ornamental red berries that add seasonal interest and attract garden birds.
With its upright, broad habit, the Common Yew is well-suited to creating tall, elegant hedges or providing year-round screening. It thrives in sun or shade, tolerates a wide range of soils, and responds well to clipping, making it a favourite for formal designs. A slow-growing but extremely hardy plant, it can live for centuries and is recognised with the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its garden performance.
