    Rose 'Summer Song'

Rose 'Summer Song' is one of David Austin's most distinctive English shrub roses, producing richly coloured orange-red blooms that are unlike almost any other rose. The medium to large flowers open into beautifully formed, full cups, with numerous loosely arranged inner petals surrounded by a perfect ring of outer petals, creating an elegant yet informal appearance.

Introduced in 2005, this unusual variety flowers repeatedly from early summer into autumn, bringing vibrant colour to the garden over a long season. The blooms are accompanied by a strong, complex fragrance combining classic Tea notes with intriguing hints of chrysanthemum leaves, ripe banana and warm spices, making it a wonderful choice for planting close to seating areas where its perfume can be fully appreciated.

Forming a bushy, upright shrub, 'Summer Song' is ideal for mixed borders, cutting gardens and feature planting. It thrives in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil and rewards gardeners with its exceptional flower colour and fragrance. The blooms are particularly effective when combined with purple, blue and deep burgundy flowering companions.

Getting the most from your new Rose

    Where to plant

Choose an open, sunny position with free-draining soil.  Avoid planting where roses have grown before or transfer fresh soil to the site.  Patio roses can be planted in mixed borders or alongside other roses, or in pots and containers.

    Planting

Roses love organic matter, so mix well-rotten manure, leaf mould or compost into the soil. Water thoroughly before planting.  Make a hole big enough not to disturb the root ball.  Remove from the pot and ensure the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.  Back-fill soil mixed with a good fertilizer, then firm.  Water thoroughly.

    Aftercare

Water well until established.  Mulching will keep the soil weed-free and moist.  For best results feed your roses with fertilizer in spring and again in summer.  Remove faded flowers to encourage speedy repeat flowering.

    Simple Pruning

Prune your rose in March or before new growth by removing any dead or very thin branches and reducing the height by 1/3 to 2/3 of the previous growth.
