Philodendron ‘Black Cardinal’ is a striking foliage houseplant prized for its large, glossy leaves and rich, dramatic colouring. New growth emerges in deep burgundy and bronze tones before maturing to an intense dark green, almost black, creating a beautiful contrast between younger and older leaves. Its compact, self-heading growth habit gives it a full and structured appearance without the need for climbing support.
Perfect for adding depth and drama to bright indoor spaces, Philodendron ‘Black Cardinal’ works beautifully as a statement plant on a plant stand, sideboard or within a mixed foliage display. Philodendron Care Sheet
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal, although it will tolerate slightly lower light levels. Avoid strong direct sunlight which can scorch the foliage.
Water: Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between watering. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away.
Soil/Nutrition: Use a free-draining houseplant or aroid compost. Feed every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
Humidity: Average household humidity is suitable, although slightly higher humidity can encourage healthy, lush growth.
Pruning and propagation: Remove old or damaged leaves at the base as required. Mature plants can be propagated by division or stem cuttings where suitable growth points are present.
