Leontopodium nivale subsp. alpinum
Leontopodium nivale subsp. alpinum, better known as Edelweiss, is an iconic alpine perennial renowned for its distinctive star-shaped white flowers and silvery-grey foliage. Native to the mountainous regions of central and southern Europe, it brings a touch of alpine charm to rockeries, gravel gardens and raised beds.
The unusual flower heads are surrounded by velvety white bracts, creating the famous woolly star appearance that has made Edelweiss a symbol of the Alps. Flowering from late spring into early summer, it provides unique texture and interest while contrasting beautifully with other alpine and drought-tolerant plants.
Thriving in full sun and sharply drained soil, Edelweiss is perfectly suited to rock gardens, troughs and dry borders. Once established, it is exceptionally hardy and tolerant of challenging growing conditions, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance alpine displays.
