Korean Fir (Abies koreana) - Pot Grown Christmas Tree

Great fragrance and dense foliage

Pot grown Korean Fir is a sought-after Christmas tree, prized for its excellent needle retention and beautifully dense foliage. Deep green needles cover distinctive tiered branches, creating a full, well-shaped tree with plenty of space for displaying larger baubles and decorations.

As a pot grown tree, it has been grown with its roots established in the pot, making it an attractive living Christmas tree for the home. Its soft, family-friendly needles make decorating easy, while the foliage gives off a mild, fresh fragrance throughout the festive season.

More About Korean Fir

Korean Fir is native to the Korean Peninsula and is known for its naturally neat, geometric form, with slender, uniform growth and attractive tiered branches.

It is one of the earlier fir species to produce cones and is valued for both its distinctive appearance and exceptional needle retention. With its soft foliage, gentle fragrance and compact form, Korean Fir makes an attractive choice for a pot grown Christmas tree.

Pot Grown or Plain Old Potted?

Pot grown trees are nurtured from a seedling, then planted in their special growing pot which is buried in a growing field. Pot grown trees are cultivated in a pot for most of their life and have an established root system. They are lovingly cared for until they are lifted out of the ground and make their way to your home. Pot grown trees are not potted or containerised so have more chance of surviving after Christmas.

Caring for Your Pot-Grown Christmas Tree

A little care will help your living Christmas tree look its best throughout the festive season and give it the best start for life in your garden afterwards.

Select a section below for our care advice.

Before bringing your tree indoors
  • Keep it sheltered. Leave your tree outside in a sheltered position until you are ready to decorate it.
  • Keep the growing pot. Your tree comes in its original growing pot, wrapped in a protective Climate Bag.
  • Check the compost. Open the Climate Bag to water when needed, allowing excess water to drain freely through the holes in the base.

Top tip: keep your tree outside for as long as possible. Bringing it indoors close to Christmas helps keep its indoor stay short.

Displaying your tree indoors
  • Remove the Climate Bag. Leave your tree in its growing pot and place it inside a decorative cover pot or suitable drip tray.
  • Choose a cool spot. Keep your tree away from radiators, fires and other sources of heat.
  • Protect your surfaces. Use a waterproof protective tray or mat beneath the pot to help prevent scratches and water damage.
  • Check moisture regularly. Water as needed to keep the compost moist, without leaving the pot standing in water. Empty any excess from the cover pot or tray.

Top tip: a cool room and a short indoor display will help your living tree stay in good condition.

After Christmas

Once the decorations are packed away, your pot-grown tree can continue life outdoors.

  • Move it to a sheltered spot. Allow it to adjust to outdoor conditions before moving it to a more exposed position.
  • Continue checking the compost. Water when needed, allowing excess water to drain away.
  • Plan its permanent home. If planting in the garden, check the variety’s eventual height and spread and choose a position with enough room to grow.
  • Wait for suitable conditions. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground.
