Ilex aquifolium 'Silver Milkmaid' (F)
Ilex aquifolium 'Silver Milkmaid' (F) is an attractive female evergreen holly with glossy, spiny dark green leaves marked with irregular creamy-white central variegation. The distinctive foliage provides excellent year-round colour and structure in borders, hedges and specimen planting.
Small white flowers appear in late spring and are attractive to pollinating insects. When grown near a suitable male holly for pollination, 'Silver Milkmaid' produces bright scarlet-red berries in autumn and winter, providing additional seasonal colour and a valuable food source for garden birds.
Hardy and adaptable, 'Silver Milkmaid' performs well in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil, with the strongest variegation generally developing in a brighter position. It can be grown as a large shrub or small tree and responds well to clipping if a more formal shape is required.
