Hydrangea aspera 'Macrophylla'
Hydrangea 'Macrophylla' is a distinctive deciduous shrub prized for its large, softly hairy green leaves. The bold foliage creates impressive texture and gives the plant an architectural presence in woodland-style borders.
From midsummer into early autumn, broad lacecap flowerheads appear, with blue-mauve fertile flowers surrounded by a delicate ring of pale mauve-pink sterile florets. The refined blooms provide subtle colour and contrast beautifully against the velvety foliage.
Best grown in partial shade and moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, this hydrangea is ideal for sheltered borders and naturalistic planting. It can also tolerate a sunnier position where the soil remains reliably moist.
