Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris
Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris is a superb self-clinging climber, renowned for its ability to thrive on shady walls and fences where many other climbers struggle. Its glossy, heart-shaped green leaves create a dense covering, making it an excellent choice for softening walls, tree trunks and other vertical surfaces.
During early to midsummer, this hardy climber is smothered in large, lacy white flower heads that stand out beautifully against the rich green foliage. The blooms are highly attractive to butterflies and other pollinating insects, while in autumn the foliage turns a warm buttery yellow, extending the season of interest.
Easy to grow and exceptionally reliable, this vigorous climber thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in shade, partial shade or full sun once established. Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, it is a long-lived and low-maintenance choice for bringing year-round structure and spectacular seasonal displays to the garden.
