Houttuynia cordata 'Flame' is a bold and colourful perennial prized for its heart-shaped foliage in fiery shades of red, orange, yellow and green. The variegated leaves develop their strongest colouring in full sun, creating a vibrant display in damp planting areas.
Small white flowers appear during summer, rising above the colourful foliage and adding a delicate seasonal contrast. The leaves also release a distinctive scent when handled, bringing an additional sensory quality to this unusual plant.
With its vigorous, spreading habit, 'Flame' provides effective ground cover in moist borders, bog gardens and around pond edges. It also grows well in large containers, which can help control its spread. Plant in moist, humus-rich soil in full sun or partial shade.
