Erica carnea f. aureifolia 'Hilletje'
Erica carnea f. aureifolia 'Hilletje' is a compact evergreen winter heath with colourful, needle-like foliage and a neat, low-growing habit. The leaves are golden-green in spring and summer, developing warm orange-red tones through autumn and winter to provide interest throughout the year.
From December to February, clusters of fragrant lilac-pink flowers appear, deepening to richer purple-pink shades as they age. The small blooms stand out against the warm winter foliage and offer a useful source of nectar for bees on milder days.
Hardy and easy to grow, 'Hilletje' is ideal for rockeries, border edging, banks and patio containers. Plant in full sun with well-drained soil, preferably acidic, although neutral and mildly alkaline soils are tolerated. Trim lightly after flowering to keep its compact shape, avoiding cuts into old woody stems.
