Erica carnea 'December Red'
Erica carnea 'December Red' is a compact evergreen heather bringing welcome colour to the garden through winter. From December to February, its small bell-shaped flowers open pink before deepening to rich purple-pink, creating an attractive contrast against the fine, green needle-like foliage.
Its low, spreading habit forms a colourful carpet, making it ideal for rockeries, banks, border edges and groundcover planting. It also works beautifully in winter containers alongside spring bulbs and contrasting evergreens. The flowers provide valuable nectar for bees during the colder months, while the foliage maintains interest throughout the year.
Hardy and easy to grow, 'December Red' performs best in full sun or light partial shade with well-drained soil. This lime-tolerant variety grows successfully in acidic, neutral or alkaline conditions, making it a versatile choice for many gardens. Light trimming after flowering helps keep its spreading growth neat and compact.
