Berberis thunbergii 'Bagatelle'
Berberis thunbergii 'Bagatelle' is a compact, slow-growing deciduous shrub with rich red-purple foliage that provides strong colour from spring through to autumn. Its naturally dense, mound-forming habit makes it particularly useful for edging, low hedging and planting in smaller garden spaces.
In spring, clusters of small yellow flowers appear against the dark foliage, attracting pollinating insects. As autumn approaches, the leaves intensify into fiery shades of crimson and orange, while bright red berries develop and may persist into winter, providing additional seasonal interest and food for garden birds.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, 'Bagatelle' is drought tolerant once established and performs best in full sun, where the foliage develops its richest colour. It is also suitable for partial shade and works well in rockeries, borders and compact planting schemes.
