Viburnum davidii
Viburnum davidii is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its bold, leathery dark green leaves with distinctive deep veins. Its dense, spreading habit forms an attractive mound, providing reliable year-round structure and ground cover.
Flattened clusters of small white flowers appear in May, followed on suitably cross-pollinated plants by ornamental metallic blue berries. For reliable fruiting, grow compatible plants together, ideally including predominantly male and female selections. The foliage remains attractive throughout the year, making this shrub useful even when flowers and berries are absent.
Hardy and low maintenance, Viburnum davidii thrives in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It is ideal for mixed borders, woodland-style planting and low informal hedging. Choose a position protected from cold, drying winds and prune lightly when needed to maintain its naturally rounded shape.
