Trachycarpus fortunei
Trachycarpus fortunei, commonly known as the Chusan Palm, is one of the hardiest palm trees suitable for UK gardens. It forms a single trunk covered with fibrous material, topped by a crown of large, fan-shaped evergreen leaves. This exotic-looking palm brings a dramatic, architectural feel to borders, courtyards, and coastal gardens, creating a striking focal point.
Hardy to surprisingly low temperatures, it performs best in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. In summer, mature plants may produce sprays of small yellow flowers, adding further interest. Requiring little maintenance once established, Trachycarpus fortunei is an excellent choice for adding a tropical touch to the garden while being reliably tough.
