Physocarpus opulifolius 'Rubella'
Physocarpus 'Rubella' is a compact, deciduous shrub prized for its dramatic deep maroon foliage, which provides bold colour contrast in borders, beds, and mixed planting schemes. Through spring and summer, the rich leaves form a dense mound of colour, making an excellent backdrop for lighter-flowering perennials or shrubs.
In early to midsummer, clusters of small creamy-white flowers appear in rounded heads above the dark foliage, creating a striking two-tone effect. These fragrant blooms are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. By autumn, they are followed by decorative reddish fruit capsules that persist into the season, offering both ornamental interest and a valuable food source for wildlife. The foliage also takes on extra tones before leaf fall, extending its seasonal appeal.
