Phalaenopsis Care Tips
Enjoy long-lasting blooms with your Phalaenopsis orchid—flowers can last for over 3 months, and with the right care, the plant can rebloom again after a rest period of around 6 months. Follow the care guidance below to help your orchid thrive and encourage repeat flowering.
Temperature & Light
- Phalaenopsis prefer warm, stable conditions: minimum 16°C at night and up to 24°C during the day. The ideal daytime temperature is between 20–22°C.
- Provide bright, indirect light and avoid direct sun, especially in summer.
- A north-, northeast-, south- or southeast-facing windowsill is ideal.
- Yellowing leaves may indicate too much sun, while dark green leaves or bud drop suggest the plant needs more light.
Watering & Humidity
- Water the potting mix, not the leaves or crown. Rainwater is preferred to hard tap water.
- Water early in the day or soak the pot for 5–10 minutes, then allow excess water to drain. This usually keeps the orchid happy for about a week.
- Phalaenopsis enjoy high humidity, so kitchens, bathrooms or conservatories make excellent locations.
Soil & Feeding
- Use specialist orchid bark-based compost for good aeration and moisture control; regular potting soil is not suitable.
- Orchid compost contains little nutrition, so feed with a liquid orchid fertiliser every two weeks from March to October.
After Flowering
- To encourage reblooming, cut the flower spike just above the second visible node (“eye”) from the base once flowering is finished.
- If you notice aerial roots growing outside the pot, this is a sign of a healthy plant. Do not force them back into the pot, as this may cause damage.
