Monstera deliciosa var. sierrana (Mexican form)
Monstera deliciosa var. sierrana (Mexican form) is a distinctive form of the Swiss Cheese Plant, prized for its deeply divided mature foliage. The glossy green leaves develop narrow segments with cuts reaching close to the central vein, creating an elegant, open silhouette.
Young plants have simpler leaves, with the characteristic divisions becoming more pronounced as they mature. Give this tropical plant bright, indirect light and a sturdy support to accommodate its climbing growth and display its sculptural foliage.
- Other names: Monstera Sierrana, Mexican-form Monstera
- Useful to know: Toxic if ingested - keep away from pets and children
- Feature: Deeply divided mature leaves with narrow segments and additional internal holes
- Care: Provide a moss pole or sturdy support as the plant develops
- Eventual height: Can reach several metres when supported; growth can be managed by pruning
- Origins: Sierra de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico
Monstera Care
Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Protect from prolonged strong sunshine, which can scorch the foliage.
Water: Allow the upper portion of compost to dry before watering thoroughly. Drain away excess water and never leave the pot standing in water.
Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity supports healthy foliage. Keep away from radiators and consider a humidifier in particularly dry rooms.
Temperature: Ideally maintain 18–25°C. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Feeding: Apply a liquid houseplant fertiliser during active growth, following the product instructions. Reduce or stop feeding when growth slows.
Repotting: Repot when the roots become crowded, using an airy, freely draining houseplant compost with added bark and perlite. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the previous one.
Support: Provide a moss pole or sturdy framework and secure the stems loosely with soft ties. Mature leaf divisions develop with time and suitable growing conditions.
Winter care: Reduce watering as growth slows, checking the compost before watering.
